My summer goal: training for the Greater Cambridge 10K

Goodness, it has been a long time since I wrote anything on here!! I’ve overcome injuries I never thought would go and have taken up new and exciting physical activities including, rather amazingly, the aerial hoop. I’ve finally been able to regularly run 5km again. But one thing I still haven’t done is enter a proper running race.

When I originally set this blog up I was planning on running a marathon. I’m not sure that I’ll ever run a marathon now – simply because I don’t want to risk getting another injury. But I do want to start pushing myself – slowly and sensibly – on the running front. A few months ago, I quietly decided that I would look for a local 10km race to enter. Originally played by American disabled veterans after World War II, wheelchair basketball is now considered to be one of the largest Para-Sports. Differing very little from the standard game of basketball – players play on the same size court and the net remains at the same height of 10ft – the fast paced, energetic and demanding nature of the sport appeals to athletes of all abilities, whether they are wheelchair users or not, making it a truly inclusive sporting experience.

When I first mentioned to my medical professionals I was thinking of giving wheelchair basketball a go, I was met with looks of shock. Some of my EDS complications include very weak finger joints which sublux and dislocate just by looking at them and so of all the sports I could of tried this was probably last on their list of ideal ones for me.
